The southwest is known for its warm climate. But forget your mental picture of blistering sun and dry arid desserts. You'll be surprised just how cool this hot southwest road trip can get. Pack plenty of water and blankets. You read that right – blankets.
Your road trip starts in the Valley of the Sun. Take North North I-17 through Flagstaff on to the Grand Canyon. Take in the grandeur of this world-famous natural land mark. From here, take the US-89 N to North Rim, Marble Canyon. Drive along US-89 and 191 and visit Glen Canyon, Canyonlands and Arches. All three parks offer plenty of opportunities for hiking, camping and enjoying wildlife – not to mention respite from the heat. A lot of road trippers worry about the heat, but what they don't realize is that the desert temperature can get surprisingly cool especially at night and at high elevation.
Continue on to Mesa Verde on the 491 South to 160 East into Southern Colorado via Durango and visit Pagosa Hot Springs. Relax and enjoy the soothing warmth of the hot springs and before heading back up to Phoenix or continuing southwest.
